"Black Cowboys in the American West" Wins Ray and Pat Browne Award

HHP Sport Administration program faculty Dr. Demetrius Pearson, is a contributor to the book "Black Cowboys in the American West: On the Range, on the Stage, behind the Badge" which has won the Ray and Pat Browne Award for Best Edited Collection in Popular Culture and American Culture. Dr. Pearson wrote Chapter 6 of the book titled, "Shadow Riders of the Subterranean Circuit: A Descriptive Account of Black Rodeo in the Texas Gulf Coast Region"

Black Cowboys in the American West surveys the life and work of black cowboys - drovers, foremen, fiddlers, cowpunchers, cattle rustlers, cooks, and singers. cattle drivers from the years before the Civil War through the turn of the twentieth century. The book was edited by Bruce A. Glasrud and Michael N. Searles with a foreword by Albert S. Broussard.

The Ray and Pat Browne Awards are given annually by the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association.

The Ray and Pat Browne Awards are named after the founders, architects, and builders of the PCA/ACA. Ray Browne was instrumental in building the associations as well as the academic study of popular culture from its early beginning to its current place as a major focus of intellectual study. He and his wife Pat Browne established The Popular Press which published many of the first works in the field. He also founded the Journal of Popular Culture and the Journal of American Culture.
