Long time HHP professor Andy Zubel has passed away
Long time HHP professor, UH line coach and world war II vet Ambrose (Andy) Zubel passed away on November 7, 2010 at the age of 89 in Houston, Texas. He was a faculty at UH for 24 years and retired as Professor Emeritus in 1986.
The Houston Chronicle published an article celebrating his life on Nov 10th, 2010. Below is an excerpt from the article.
Ambrose Dominic Zubel, a World War II veteran and lifelong lover of football who coached at the University of Houston, has died. He was 89.
Zubel, who succumbed Sunday to heart failure at a Houston nursing and rehabilitation center, was a UH line coach from 1957 to 1961, then stayed on as a professor of physical education for the next 25 years.
"His legacy is all the lives he touched as a coach and teacher," said Michael Zubel, his son. "I remember the family couldn't go out to dinner when I was a kid without a former player or student coming by to thank my dad for his teaching and counseling. He was a mentor and a role model."
Zubel was a UH assistant coach under Hal Lahar, who ran offenses out of the Split-T formation and won Missouri Valley Conference titles in 1957 and 1959. Lahar was succeeded by Bill Yeoman, who went on to become UH's winningest coach.
