Dr. Edward Burrell Ramsey
Born on November 6, 1852, Dr. Edward Burrell Ramsey was raised in Hogansville, Georgia. He graduated in 1880, a member of the first class at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee and became the first African-American doctor in Troup County, Georgia. Dr. Ramsey later relocated to Houston, where he became the first African American to practice medicine as a general practitioner. A devoted physician, Dr. Ramsey died of a heart attack while seeing patients on November 6, 1927, his 75th birthday. He is buried in Franklin, Tennessee.
