Between History, Memoir, and Fiction: Telling the Story of the Jews of Cuba
Sponsored by the Center for Public History, Jewish Studies, the Department of Modern
& Classical Languages, and the Holocaust Museum Houston.
Come join us Thursday, September 19th for a public presentation by Dr. Ruth Behar
on her experience as a filmmaker, novelist, memoir-writer, poet, and researcher on
the history of the Cuban Jewish community.
When: Thursday, September 19th
Where: Honors Commons, M.D. Anderson Library
Time: 2:30 PM
Please also join the Holocaust Museum Houston for a screening of Dr. Behar's “Adio
Kerida,” a documentary about the search for identity and history among Sephardic Jews
with roots in Cuba. The title is borrowed from a Sephardic love song in order to highlight
the themes of expulsion, departure and exile that are at the crux of the Sephardic
legacy. At the same time, the title invokes the creative energy that is injected into
a culture when it crosses racial, ethnic and national lines. It also has a personal
dimension and references the desire for reconciliation between the filmmaker and her
Sephardic father.
When: Thursday, September 19th
Where: Holocaust Museum Houston
Time: 6:00PM
Attending the screening at the Holocaust Museum Houston is free, but registration
is required. Please click the link for more information: https://hmh.org/events/adio-kerida-2019-09-19-18:00:00
