Ph.D. Position in AI Accountability Project

The Computational Biomedicine Lab at the University of Houston is offering a funded Ph.D. position in AI Accountability as part of the Community Responsive Algorithms for Social Accountability (CRASA) project. Learn more about CRASA at https://uh-crasa.org/

The successful candidate will collaborate with Prof. Ioannis A. Kakadiaris and Dr. Haileleol Tibebu, focusing on research that explores accountability architectures for AI algorithms. The objectives of this project are (i) to co-develop an algorithmic accountability benchmark with the community and (ii) to assess software used in public policy across various dimensions of this benchmark.

We seek a motivated candidate with a Computer Science, AI, or Data Science background. The individual should be able to think innovatively, contribute to research collaborations, and actively participate in the co-design of accountability measures within AI technology.

The focus of the research:

  • Development of an AI accountability benchmark.
  • Evaluation of AI software used in public policy.
  • Presentation of findings in both written and oral forms.
  • Active contribution to the co-design of accountability measures with the community.
  • Collaborative research with project supervisors and fellow researchers.

General admission criteria:

  • A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, AI, digital ethics/philosophy, or Data Science.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good collaboration abilities and communication skills.
  • A commitment to scientific research.
  • A proven interest in AI Accountability and its societal implications.
  • Having prior experience with publishing is advantageous.
