The BTI Institute kicked off a new research project with researchers from the National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events at the University of Southern California on 17 January 2020. 

Detlof von Winterfeldt, Ph.D., and Jonathan Eyer, Ph.D., will investigate the impact of a changing economic environment and identify those migrants that would be most responsive to those changes as part of their project, Economic Motivations of Migrants from the Northern Triangle. 

Additionally, the team will look at case studies from Mexico and Puerto Rico in which large migration flows did come to an end, potentially due to changes in economic conditions in those countries. 

The project is in response to a request for proposals that the Institute issued specifically to address research questions related to prosperity and security in Central America. 

The project is being championed by representatives from the Department of Homeland Security Office of Strategy, Policy, and Plans.

CREATE was established in 2004 as the first university-based Center of Excellence funded by DHS Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs. More on CREATE can be found here.
