Dr. Dawn Mopkins
Role in A&F: UH Director of Occupational Health Services Why did you choose to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy with a major in Nursing Science? I never want the health services that I provide to become complacent; therefore, I am always seeking opportunities to learn, grow, and promote employee health & wellness. Pursuing this terminal degree was a logical next step for my professional path, and I intend to utilize the acquired tools to advocate for all the employees that I serve. |

Patricia Ortiz
Role in A&F: News Intern at Houston Public Media Why did you choose that major? I chose Journalism as my major because I've always loved writing and being creative. Originally, I was aiming for a job in print or digital media because those mediums are usually more long-form and allow more creativity with stories. However, I love that I've ended up in radio and gotten an opportunity to show my creativity in different ways through NAT sound and fitting what's most important in a short news story. |

Yolanda Brooks Brown
Role in A&F: Manager, Houston Public Media Staff Outreach & Engagement Why did you choose that major? After reading Flowers in the Attic, approximately 25 Harlequin Romance paperbacks, and at least 20+ Agatha Christie novels during my freshman year in high school, I knew without a doubt I wanted to be a writer! Throughout high school, I wrote song lyrics, poetry, short stories and dabbled in playwriting. After receiving my BA in Government/Political Science from UT at Austin, I was admitted to several graduate Creative Writing programs. However, due to unforeseen life circumstances, I was unable to start any of the programs during my younger years. Fast forward 26 years, I was admitted to the University of Houston at Victoria (UHV) in 2019, where I received a Master of Science in Publishing (July 2021) and a Master of Fine Arts in Literature, Creative Writing (December 2022), with the end-goal of utilizing my education in a creative capacity within Houston Public Media, self-publishing my work and the works of others in the near future, and someday teaching college-level writing courses. |
