UH at the Rodeo

February 28, 2017

Howdy, Cougars –

Our city takes great pride in our Western heritage and there’s no better example of that than the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Since UH is “Houston’s University,” I encourage you to join me in acknowledging this worthy tradition by wearing your best cowboy clothes to school Friday for “Go Texan” Day, the citywide celebration of the rodeo.

Each year, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo generously provides scholarships to hundreds of college students, so let’s take this opportunity to show our gratitude – and to tip our 10-gallon hat to the city’s cowboy legacy.

I’m also proud to announce that our new head football coach, Major Applewhite, will serve as marshal for the Downtown Rodeo Parade Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. We will also have our customary University of Houston float participating in the parade as well as the UH Spirit of Houston Marching Band.

We will also observe “UH Night at the Rodeo” – this year on Monday, March 20 – with all our Cougars in attendance urged to prominently display their Cougar Red attire. I hope you are there to see me ride in the Grand Entry Parade that evening. After doing this a few years, I’m starting to feel pretty good on horseback.

So, get ready to rodeo, Cougars, starting with Go Texan Day this Friday. Before you come to campus, dust off your boots, squeeze into some jeans, and find that belt with the shiny big buckle. And don’t forget that this is also Cougar Red Friday, giving you a great opportunity to show off your school colors while you’re at it. So, Go Coogs … and Go Texan!

With warm regards,

Renu Khator
