Current degree track / completed UH degree:

MA Public History PhD History

How was public history part of your degree plan? (elective courses, minor or major field of study, special project, class project, or other?)

It was my MA focus.

What elements of public history did you focus on most? (oral history, museum work, preservation, publications, writing a Houston History article, exhibits, digital work, etc.)*

Encyclopedia editing, Houston History Article, & digital exhibits.  If there had been a museum focus available, I would have done that.

How has working with the Center for Public History or on a public history project helped you in your career and / or current working position?*

It was a fantastic way to get some experience.  It gave me the confidence to apply to jobs after I graduated.

What did you find most meaningful in your experience with public history?*

I am a public historian because I love sharing history with people from all ages and backgrounds. It is a constant challenge trying to interpret history for such a wide group of people, but I enjoy acting as a bridge between the university and the public. Also, being an advocate for public history suits my skills and professional goals.

What is your planned career trajectory?*

Museum Leadership or Curator, Preservation Advocate, and Public History Advocate

Do you have any advice for future public history students?*

Sample as many types of public history jobs as you can in the safety of school. What I thought I wanted to do as my career turned out to not suit me at all. It was a miserable experience. However, I have been able to go back to other types of work and have found a really fulfilling career that suits my talents and preferences.
