Visiting Students
Welcome to the University of Houston! We are happy that you have chosen to take courses here to further your degree at your home institution.
If you are interested in applying to UH as a visiting student, see the Visiting Student admission page.If you have already been admitted as a visiting student, here are your next steps to get started:
-
- Look up the courses you plan to take in the UH Undergraduate Catalog. You must meet all course prerequisites to enroll.
- If courses you plan to take have prerequisites that you have taken at an external
institution, submit your official electronic college transcript(s) as soon as possible for review by the Office of Admissions.
- Please allow at least a month prior to enrollment for the Admissions office to process your official transcripts. Submitting transcripts later than this timeline may not allow enrollment for that semester.
- Monitor the transfer credit status in your myUH Self Service portal: Academic Records > Transcripts > View Transfer Credit Report. Once your transcript has been reviewed and posted, you will see it listed there.
- Once your credit is posted, confirm that you have been awarded the exact course equivalent for the prerequisite course you need. Some credits, especially upper division and out-of-state credit, may be transferred as general elective credit or elective credit within a subject area.
- If you did not receive credit for a course for which you believe your transfer course is equivalent, submit the Transfer Credit Petition along with any required documentation.
- Take any placement tests. Plan to take these exams as early as possible—most of should
be completed at least two weeks before you intend to enroll in courses.Language Placement:
See the Examination List, click Institutional Placement/Departmental Credit Tests,
and select the desired language.
Other Placement Testing: See UH Testing Services to see whether placement testing is required for any courses you plan to take and to understand when and how to take each exam.
Math Placement: Note that our Visiting students do not take the Math Placement Exam and instead will be placed according to the usual course prerequisites based on prior college-level math credits. - If you have submitted transcripts and submitted the Transfer Credit Petition, and it has been longer than a month, or it is within two weeks of the first day
of the semester, please request a conditional review by contacting the college that
offers the course you are interested in taking. This is a last step and colleges will ask for documentation that you have submitted the transfer Credit Petition.
