Opposing opinions will square off during the “Black Reparations Debate,” an event that will inspire deep examination, maybe even influence points of view.
Reparations proponent Rashawn Ray and well-known reparations opponent Richard Epstein will address the issues behind the topic Nov. 4 at the University of Houston. The event is hosted by the UH Hobby School of Public Affairs and the Elizabeth D. Rockwell Center on Ethics and Leadership.
Calls for various forms of reparations for this country’s history of slavery and legally sanctioned racial discrimination have been heard since the close of the Civil War, yet no consensus on the matter has ever been reached. Amid renewed voices for civil rights, the issue is being examined again.
Who: Rashawn Ray, senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, professor of sociology and executive director of the Lab for Applied Social Science Research at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Richard Epstein, Laurence A. Tisch professor of law at New York University School of Law, Peter and Kirstin Bedford senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, James Parker Hall distinguished service professor of law emeritus at the University of Chicago.
