2024 Texas Clarinet Symposium

Presented by the University of Houston, Moores School of Music (MSM), the inaugural Texas Clarinet Symposium takes place May 20-23, 2024 and brings together master clarinetists and young clarinetists from around the world to celebrate the clarinet. Join us for orchestral audition workshops, concerts, masterclasses, and educational presentations.

What to look forward to

  • About the Symposium

    Featuring a distinguished faculty, including members of the Houston and Dallas Symphony Orchestras, the inaugural Texas Clarinet Symposium offers elite instruction for aspiring orchestral clarinetists and enriching clarinet experiences for all.

    Recitals, masterclasses, pedagogical presentations, and other experiences for clarinetists of all levels are included. There are four different tracks, three for students and one for the general public. All events except private lessons are open to Symposium attendees. An exhibition area for vendors is open to all.

    Orchestra Audition Academy
    • Designed for advanced clarinetists pursuing professional performing positions.
    • Selected participants will perform in three mock auditions for panels of leading orchestral clarinetists, receiving feedback and coaching from members of the jury.
    • Private lessons from faculty with positions in professional orchestras are included.
    • A recorded audition is required.
    • Cost:
      • Early Bird: 3/1/24 - $500
      • Priority: 4/1/24 - $550
      • Late: 5/1/24 - $600

    Artist Academy
    • Designed for university/conservatory students interested in solo repertoire.
    • Selected participants will perform in public masterclasses and receive private lessons with distinguished university clarinet faculty members.
    • A recorded audition is required.
    • Cost:
      • Early Bird: 3/1/24 - $350
      • Priority: 4/1/24 - $400
      • Late: 5/1/24 - $450

    High School Academy
    • Designed for high school students interested in expanding their knowledge of the clarinet and career opportunities for clarinetists.
    • Students will participate in group activities, after school hours (late afternoon and evenings), led by members of the symposium faculty. 
    • No audition is required.
    • Cost:
      • Early Bird: 3/1/24 - $50
      • Priority: 4/1/24 - $100
      • Late: 5/1/24 - $150

  • Apply to the Orchestra Audition Academy and Artist Academy

    Participants will be limited to 20 individuals – 8 for the Orchestra Audition Academy and 12 for the Artist Academy. Recorded video audition links (shareable YouTube or Vimeo link) should be submitted through our registration form. The priority deadline for audition submission is April 1, 2024. Notification of acceptance for early-bird and priority applicants will be no later than April 15, 2024. All remaining applications will be assessed on a rolling basis until we reach full capacity.

    Application Procedure for Orchestra Audition Academy

    • Orchestra Audition Academy: Designed for advanced clarinetists pursuing professional performing positions, selected participants will perform in three mock auditions for panels of leading orchestral clarinetists, receiving feedback and coaching from members of the jury. Private lessons from faculty with positions in professional orchestras are included. A recorded audition is required.
    • Video recording links (shareable YouTube or Vimeo link) of audition repertoire.
      • Orchestra Audition Academy audition requirements:
        • Mozart: Concerto in A, mvt 1, beginning to mm. 75 (piano accompaniment optional)
        • Mendelssohn: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Scherzo, beginning to letter B (m.49) 
        • Beethoven: Symphony #6 mvt 1, two bars before letter K until 18 bars after K; mvt 2 one bar before letter D until 1 bar before letter E.
        • Brahms: Symphony #3, mvt 1 mm. 36-42; and mvt 2 mm. 1-22. 
    • Completed submission of the form below.

    Application Procedure for Artist Academy

    • Artist Academy: Designed for university/conservatory students interested in solo repertoire, selected participants will perform in public masterclasses and receive private lessons with distinguished university clarinet faculty members. A recorded audition is required.
    • Video recording links (shareable YouTube or Vimeo link) of audition repertoire.
      • Artist Academy audition requirements: 
        • Auditioners should submit a substantial portion of the solo intended to be performed in the symposium master class. Entire works or movements are not required.
        • For works with piano, a recording with piano accompaniment is desirable but not required.

    Application Procedure for High School Academy

    • High School Academy: Designed for high school students interested in expanding their knowledge of the clarinet and career opportunities for clarinetists. Students will participate in group activities, after school hours (late afternoon and evenings), led by members of the symposium faculty.
    • Completed submission of the form below. No audition is required.

     

  • Location and Parking

    Location:
    All Symposium events will take place at the University of Houston, Moores School of Music.

    Parking:
    Public Parking is available near the Moores School of Music. A flat fee parking pass will be available for purchase for all Symposium dates.

  • Housing and Meals

    All housing and meal expenses are the sole responsibility of those participating and attending the Symposium.

    Housing:
    There are several reasonably priced hotels near Hobby Airport, approximately 15 minutes from campus. Out-of-town students are encouraged to share housing costs with friends or others they know attending. A roommate finder option will be provided after registration has been completed.  Uber and Lyft are reasonably priced transportation options for those flying in and staying at one of the hotels near the airport.

    Meals:
    Hungry? You're in luck: from bagels to Seared Balsamic Tuna, great food is around every corner at the University of Houston. Here are some of the on-campus options:

    Eric's Restaurant offers American bistro fare with a South American/Italian twist. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week, Eric's is staffed by students of the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management.
    UH Dining Services offer a variety of options across campus, including Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, and Einstein Bros. Bagels.

    Please note: there may be some on-campus closures due to summer holiday hours. We are happy to provide off-campus dining recommendations in the event that on-campus options are limited.
