Spring Flood Safety

As spring arrives, increased rainfall can lead to rising water levels, overflowing rivers, and flash floods. These sudden floods can pose significant risks to communities, especially in low-lying areas that can be found in Houston. It's crucial to stay informed about weather conditions and be prepared to take action if flooding occurs. Even small amounts of standing or moving water can be dangerous, so exercising caution is essential.

Flood Safety Tips:

  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown – Never attempt to drive through flooded roads; just 12 inches of moving water can sweep a vehicle away.
  • Stay Informed – Monitor local weather alerts, flood warnings, and emergency notifications.
  • Have an Emergency Kit – Keep essentials like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, and important documents in a waterproof container.
  • Avoid Walking in Floodwaters – Floodwaters often contain debris and contaminants that could harm you.
  • Know Your Evacuation Routes – Plan ahead in case you need to leave quickly.

Taking precautions and staying aware can help protect lives and property during the rainy spring season.  For more information, visit: https://www.uh.edu/emergency-management/be-prepared/flood/
