With colder temperatures on the horizon, the Office of Emergency Management urges the campus community to take proactive steps to prepare for winter weather conditions. While Houston winters are typically mild, recent years have shown the importance of being ready for unexpected severe conditions. Below are some tips for staying prepared.

Preparedness Tips:

  1. Protect Your Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes and outdoor faucets to prevent freezing and bursting. Let faucets drip slowly during freezing temperatures.
  1. Stay Informed: Sign up for emergency alerts in MyUH/PASS and monitor local news for weather updates.
  1. Build an Emergency Kit: Include essentials such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, blankets, and first-aid supplies. Don’t forget medications and pet needs.
  1. Check on Neighbors: Look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbors who may need assistance during extreme weather.
  1. Stay Off the Roads: If icy conditions occur, avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. Black ice can be especially hazardous.
  1. Pet Safety: Bring pets indoors and ensure they have adequate shelter if they must stay outside.
