National Endowment for the Humanities Awards Prestigious Grant to Modern and Classical Languages Professor

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr. Julie Tolliver, assistant professor of French and Francophone Studies in the department of Modern and Classical Languages, has been selected as a grant recipient by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for her research project, A Poetics of Solidarity in Francophone Independence Literatures. read more

Several CLASS students graduate with 4.0 GPAs

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences celebrates the success of its summer and fall graduates at its Fall Convocation ceremony on December 16. Six undergraduates completed their studies with perfect 4.0 grade point averages, and five of them are profiled here. Congratulations to them and to all our graduates. read more

CLASS’s oldest graduate this semester celebrates reaching lifelong goal

In 1961, Carol Kelly graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology with an associate’s degree in Management/Design and plans to continue her education by earning a bachelor’s degree. But marriage, children, aging parents, and a series of relocations around the country forced Kelly to push her educational goals aside year after year. On December 16, at the age of 73, Kelly will mark a milestone she has been coveting for over 50 years. read more

Summer 2016 and Fall 2016 CLASS grads were invited to this fun event. Everything was free – decorating supplies, food, snacks, and soft drinks. Students enjoyed each other’s company as they designed unique caps to make them stand out during convocation. Take a look at a photo gallery here.

Gulf Coast Journal turns 30

Founded by Philip Lopate and Donald Barthelme in 1986, Gulf Coast is a journal of literature, art, and critical art writing, publishing contributors who represent a flow of international cultures, voices, and aesthetics. Through programs and publications, and in collaboration with the University of Houston, Gulf Coast brings consequential art and writing to an engaged audience. read more

Human health in outer space

Health and Human Performance has had a long-standing relationship with NASA’s Johnson Space Center, teaming up to provide research, researchers and future employees-all focused on supporting humans in space. The department is interested in understanding the body and analyzing and promoting healthy living. And one critical issue about long-term space missions is staying healthy. read more

Professor, author fosters inclusivity with LGBTQ activism

Associate professor of English, feminist, political activist and LGBT advocate Maria C. Gonzalez has been breaking barriers since the start of her career. When Dr. Gonzalez steps foot in a new classroom each semester, she welcomes her students with the same phrase so they have an understanding of who she is. Arte Público Press turns the page on 35 years

Arte Público Press (APP), the nation’s oldest publisher of contemporary and recovered Hispanic literature in the United States, is celebrating 35 years of promoting the voices of Latino writers. Born from the struggle for civil rights and a desire to speak to the Latino culture in our country, APP has made large strides to achieve its goal. Over the years, APP has launched the work of authors who have become well known to mainstream readers. read more
