Placement and Promotion

How will I be placed in a level?

During the LCC Check-In Week, you will be required to take three placement tests. The placement test scores will be used to calculate your Placement Score according to the chart below:

Placement Tests

% of Placement Score

Test Descriptions

CaMLA Test

50%

A multiple-choice exam that tests a student’s listening and reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary mastery

Speaking Test

25%

An oral examination that tests content, grammar, and fluency

Writing Sample Test

25%

A test that evaluates grammar, vocabulary, organization, content, and mechanics

The Placement Score will be used for initial placement according to the chart below:

Level

Fall, Spring, and Summer Semester

Placement Score

Summer II Semester

Placement Score

1

0 - 26

0 - 35

2

27 - 43

36 - 51

3

44 - 58

52 - 65

4

59 - 71

66 - 76

5

72 - 81

77 - 83

6

82 - 100

84 - 100

For example, you scored a 75 on the CaMLA Test, an 80 on the Speaking Test, and a 66 on the Writing Sample:

75 x 50% = 37.5
+ 80 x 25% = 20
+ 66 x 25% = 16.5
37.5 + 20 + 16.5 = 74

The Placement Score is 74, therefore you would be placed in Level 5.

How do I get promoted to the next level?

Your promotion will depend on your Promotion Score. The promotion test scores will be used to calculate your Promotion Score according to the chart below:

Promotion Tests

% of Promotion Score

Test Descriptions

Teacher Evaluation Score

33%

A score that shows your performance in class.

MTELP

33%

A multiple-choice exam that tests a student’s listening and reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary mastery

Writing Sample Test

33%

A test that evaluates grammar, vocabulary, organization, content, and mechanics

In order to progress to the next level (or graduate), students must achieve both of the following:

  • a final course grade of C (73%) or higher in each area (oral skills, reading, and writing and structure); and
  • a Promotion Score in the next higher level (see below)

Level

Promotion Score

1

0 - 26

4

59 - 71

5

6

G (Completed Level 6 and Graduated)

85 - 100

For example, you scored an 85 on the Teacher Evaluation, an 80 on the MTELP, and an 81 on the Writing Sample Test:

85 x 33% = 28
+ 80 x 33% = 26
+ 85 x 33% = 28
28 + 26 + 28 = 82

The Promotion Score is 82. Therefore, you would be promoted to Level 6.

I successfully completed Level 6 in the LCC. Do I have to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores when I apply for UH?

Students who have successfully completed Level 6 in the LCC are not required to present a TOEFL or an IELTS score when seeking admission to undergraduate programs and a growing number of graduate programs at the University of Houston.
