Public Heritage and Spatial Humanities in the South Texas Borderlands

This talk with René A. Ballesteros’s will discuss his work leveraging digital platforms with anthropological insights to foster community engagement and cultural heritage preservation. A Q&A moderated by Shine Trabucco, PhD candidate in history, will follow.

The keynote is part of the Digital Humanities at University of Houston (DH@UH) 2025 event series, organized by the Digital Humanities Core facility in partnership with the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute and UH Libraries. DH@UH fosters interdisciplinary dialogue, advancing digital humanities research that amplifies marginalized voices and connects academic inquiry with public engagement.

About the Speaker

René A. Ballesteros is currently pursuing a master’s degree in anthropology at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, focusing on Mexican American studies and history. Ballesteros holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from UT Pan American. With extensive experience in the nonprofit sector, he has previously served as a development manager for Latinos in Heritage Conservation, a commissioner with the Hidalgo County Historical Committee, and held roles in community engagement and event programming at the Museum of South Texas History.
