Student Opportunity: Participate on the UH Team Proposing to NASA's Undergraduate Student Instrumentation Project
Physics and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Departments Organizing Team to Submit Proposal to Study the Aurora Borealis and Upper Atmosphere

The NASA Science Mission Directorate released an Undergraduate Student Instrument Project Educational Flight Opportunity soliciting U.S. university proposals to develop an Earth or space science payload that will fly on a NASA suborbital vehicle, such as a sounding rocket, balloon, aircraft, or commercial suborbital reusable launch vehicle.

The UH Departments of Physics and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences are organizing a team to submit a proposal to study the aurora borealis and the upper atmosphere using multiple payloads and hand launched balloons. A select number of students should be able to travel to Alaska to launch the experiments.

Students interested in participating in the project should attend an information session on Wednesday, February 20, at 5:30 pm in Science and Research Building 1, Room 502.

The student team will be multidisciplinary and include undergraduate students from all disciplines, including engineering, science, humanities, business, art, and other fields.

Proposals to NASA are due April 5, 2013, with selections announced by May 10, 2013, and project initiation in September 2013. The chosen experiments are planned to be flown starting June 2014.
