Pulitzer Prize Winner Talks Poverty and Profit at Special Lecture

By Chris Stipes

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Matthew Desmond will speak at the inaugural “Speaking of Social Justice, Maconda Brown O’Connor Distinguished Lecture” hosted by the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW).

“Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize in General Nonfiction for the story of eight American families on the edge. According to the author’s website, the book “transforms our understanding of extreme poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving a devastating, uniquely American problem.”

The lecture will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 10 at the UH Student Center Theater followed by a reception and book signing.

“Through his book, the GCSW community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends read and explored together issues in keeping with our college’s vision of achieving social, racial, economic and political justice, local to global,” said Alan Dettlaff, dean of the GCSW.

“Our goal, with both the lecture and our annual Summer Social Justice Reading series, is to heighten awareness and spark the conversations necessary to achieve real and lasting change.”
