Finals Mania Fuels Students for Finals Week

Finals Week for the fall semester fell on the first week of December, and to help University of Houston students fuel up for their test-heavy week, Administration and Finance’s Office of Administration and University Libraries hosted Finals Mania in the M.D. Anderson Library.

The twice-a-year event, a tradition dating back to 2008, sees UH administrators serving students breakfast food and beverages. This December, 856 students feasted on breakfast tacos, cookies, coffee, juice, sports drinks, and other snacks to fuel their minds and stomachs.

Student Government Association President Benjamin Rizk said Finals Mania is an excellent event for the UH student community to come together to share food and have a good time before finals and presents an opportunity for those who are graduating to have one last on-campus hurrah before walking the stage.

To kick off the event, the Spirit of Houston, accompanied by Shasta, welcomed the hungry students with their boisterous sound and energy. And while Finals Mania has been a staple at the university, for some students, the experience is new.

Fega Ogbevire, a junior, is among those who experienced Finals Mania for the first time, and he came away impressed.

“It’s actually pretty impressive,” said Ogbevire. “I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere where somebody has ever done anything like this. So, I know most people are studying for finals, so to have something like this where they can have food for all the students, I think that’s pretty nice.”

Jaden Kirven, a political science major, enjoyed the event highlighting the bacon tacos as his favorite item. And while the junior enjoyed the event, he added that he wouldn’t mind if future Finals Mania’s had a socializing component to it.

“Finals mania is a good campus tradition that I'm really happy has been here for a long time,” said Rizk. “I'm hoping it can only be continued.”
