Support Programs

DREAM Scholars: The Center for Student Empowerment Supports Undocumented Students

  • The Center for Student Empowerment (CSE) complements the larger mission of the University of Houston by expanding opportunities for the university's diverse student population by preventing minor obstacles from becoming major setbacks to degree achievement.
  • The priority at UEP is to help students thrive by offering a variety of services that students need to get the most out of their college experience and prepare for a successful future. One of our many goals is to expand opportunities for DACA and undocumented students by providing the support they need to achieve the social and economic mobility they desire. The multifaceted components of our program promote scholarship, community service, and personal and professional development by offering a holistic approach to advising.

Reach Peer Educators

The REACH Peer Educators (RPEs), formerly known as CDI Student Ambassadors, are a part of CDI's new REACH initiative to advance cultural awareness across campus through peer education. REACH Peer Educators are a group of diverse student leaders who come together to promote the mission and vision of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion by supporting the Center’s programs, services, and initiatives. Peer Educators will have multiple opportunities to develop foundational leadership skills while participating in identity exploration and peer education.

As a REACH Peer Educator, students will have the opportunity to:
  • Demonstrate foundational knowledge of cultural identities as it relates to self and others
  • Facilitate dialogues on diversity and inclusion related topics amongst their peers under the guidance of a CDI staff member
  • Collaborate with student organizations to plan and host programs during cultural month celebrations
  • Engage in team-building opportunities that cultivate relationships with each other as REACH Diversity Peer Educators

Rise Diversity Leadership Program

  • CDI offers an introductory (level 1) diversity certificate program, RISE. RISE is an introductory (level 1) diversity certificate program for students.
  • The program provides engaging workshops and programs aimed at increasing students’ knowledge and understanding of their own culture and the culture of others. Improvement in these areas enhances students’ ability to effectively engage and work with diverse populations.
Benefits of Participating:
  1. Gain marketable skills needed to work on a diverse team for future internship and employment opportunities
  2. Increase your cultural understanding of self and others
  3. Receive plaque and recognition at the annual Spring Campus Leaders Ceremony

Scholarships

The Gustavo H. Villalpando Scholarships for Students Minoring in Mexican American Studies

  • The Center for Mexican American Studies is currently seeking applicants for two scholarships designed for students minoring in Mexican American Studies. Applicants for the Gustavo H. Villapando Scholarship for Foreign-Born Students and the Gustavo H. Villalpando Excelente Scholarship have been established to provide students who are minoring in Mexican American Studies educational opportunities.
  • One student will be selected for each of the scholarships. The two scholarships are being financially supported by the Crim & Villalpando Law Firm (Houston, Texas) in recognition that Mexican American Studies is an important field of study that will help students become better leaders and more successful professionals after college. Recipients for each of the scholarships will receive $1,250 for the fall semester and the same amount for the spring semester.

Learning Abroad Multicultural Success Scholarship

  • The Office of the Provost awarded the Center for Mexican American Studies the Multicultural Success fund. This funding will award one time scholarships to UH students to participate in the summer 2020 study abroad program. The students will participate in Spanish and cultural immersion courses. The goal of the scholarship is to allow students to earn university credit, live with a host family, and participate in a Spanish and cultural immersion program.
  • The Multicultural Success funds will provide direct real-world experience, preparing students for success in their lives and their careers upon graduation.
  • The Multicultural Success scholarship will be $5,000.

Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Program

  • The University of Houston was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation to fund the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Program in the Fall 2017. This program awards individual scholarships to 40 academically outstanding students who are the first in their families to attend college and demonstrate a financial need. Currently, nearly half of the university’s undergraduate population, or 49 percent, are first-generation college students.
  • The Center for Student Empowerment (CSE) worked in tandem with UH to develop the framework for the program. UEP supports these students in adjusting to college life, as well as providing opportunities for them to grow as an individual and as a member of the university community. Scholarship recipients receive a total of $5,000.

Latinx Educational Programs

  • The Center for Mexican American Studies offers a minor in Mexican American Studies. The material covered in the minor conveys the broad and rich experiences of Latinos and Latinas in the United States. A minor in Mexican American Studies augments a student's major area of study and prepares them to better understand the history, culture, social relations, folklore, literature, politics, and numerous contributions that Latinos and Latinas have made to U.S. society.

Latin American Studies Minor

  • UH's Latin American Studies Minor and Program (LAST) in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is designed to encourage study and teaching relating to this very important geographic and cultural area.
