LITERARY AWARD
ESCRITURA REVUELTA
Convocation 2020-2021

RULES AND REGULATIONS
  1. The general goal of this award is firstly to celebrate the enormous prowess of literature written in Spanish in the United States, stressing the fact that Spanish is not (and has never been) a foreign language, and, furthermore, that it is not merely a marker of linguistic diversity, but a vehicle of thought, creativity and sensibility. At the same time, the award privileges modes of expression that are less attended to by major publishing houses and even academia. Last but not least, the award is and shall remain overtly political, unsilencing oppressed and underprivileged minorities, allowing for the discussion of important and contested topics, refusing to conceal uncomfortable tensions for the status quo.
  2. The particular goal of this literary award is to promote literature as a form to expose discourses, identities and subjectivities as ones who have been under attack by the heteronormative societies which are still imposing role models and values upon subjects while disregarding our diversity as human beings.
  3. The THEME for this year's award is 2020: unexpected, polemical, devastating . The events we have witnessed in 2020 have transformed and affected us all in one way or another: from the COVID-19 pandemic to race riots and the Black Lives Matter movement, to natural disasters and the contentious elections in the United States. These events have held serious repercussions that have shocked and shaken us, making 2020 a year that has changed us as a society and as individuals.
  4. Contestants can participate in one of the following literary genre:
    • Poetry: 10-15 pages.
    • Prose (short story/stories, theater, memoirs, personal essay): 20-30 pages.
  5. The award is open to all writers who are enrolled in a Spanish graduate program (M.A., M.F.A., Ph.D.) in the United States for the 2020-2021 academic year.
  6. Contestants should submit their work to Dr. Paola Arboleda, Escritura Revuelta, [parboeda@central.uh.edu], attaching the manuscript and following these guidelines:
    • email text: must include the name of the author, the title of the manuscript, postal address, and a phone number. On the first page of the manuscript ONLY the title of the work should appear.
    • manuscript: must be sent in PDF format, written in Spanish (different modes are accepted: Peninsular Spanish, Latinamerican, or US Latino); the name of the author must not appear on any page; the title of the work must appear on the first page and on every page next to the page number.
    • enrollment in a graduate program: a copy of at least one semester of course enrollment for the 2020-2021 academic year must be included.
  7. The postmark deadline for submission is September 11, 2021. Postmark date will be the email date
  8. One prize of $2,000 will be awarded (this amount may be subject to tax withholdings; to receive the award, participants need to have a SSN and will need to fill out a W9 Form). The administration reserves the exclusive right to publish and promote the work for one year without remuneration to the author. A selection of the awarded work will be published in the magazine Literal, Latin American Voices.
  9. The jury will be comprised of writers and professors whose names will be released once the prize has been awarded. The jury’s decision cannot be appealed. The jury retains the right not to grant an award to the 2021 submissions.
  10. The jury will announce its decision no later than October 20, 2021. The winner will be announced by the press networks of the Department of Hispanic Studies and the University of Houston.
  11. The award ceremony will be held at a public event on a date and place that will be announced in due course. The winner will be invited to participate in a presentation/recital of the awarded work.
  12. By submitting the work for consideration in the Literary Prize Escritura Revuelta, the participant agrees to the conditions as stated and interpreted by the administration and award committee.

conforme a las siguientes
BASES Y REGULACIONES:

  • El objetivo general de este premio es, en primer lugar, celebrar la extraordinaria calidad de la literatura escrita en español en los Estados Unidos, recalcando que este idioma no es (y nunca ha sido) una lengua extranjera y que, más que un marcador de diversidad lingüística, el español es un vehículo de pensamiento, creatividad y sensibilidad que privilegia modos de expresión a menudo ignorados por las casas editoriales e incluso por la academia. Por último, el premio es y debe mantenerse abiertamente político, rompiendo el silencio de minorías desfavorecidas y oprimidas, permitiendo la discusión de temas importantes y controvertidos, y negándose a ocultar cuestiones incómodas para el status quo.
  • El objetivo particular de este premio literario es promover la literatura como expresión de los discursos, identidades y subjetividades que han sido atacados y marginados por las sociedades hegemónicas o que continúan imponiendo modelos y valores que rechazan la diversidad étnica y cultural.
  • El TEMA para concursar en esta convocatoria es 2020: insólito, polémico, devastador . Los acontecimientos de los que fuimos testigos en 2020 nos han transformado y afectado a todos en mayor o menor medida: desde la pandemia de COVID-19 hasta los disturbios raciales y el movimiento Black Lives Matter, pasando por desastres naturales y las polémicas elecciones en Estados Unidos. Eventos de serias repercusiones que nos han conmocionado y conmovido, haciendo del 2020 un año que nos ha transformado como sociedad y como individuos.
  • Se puede concursar en uno de los siguientes géneros literarios:
    • Poesía: 10-15 páginas.
    • Prosa (cuento/s, teatro, memorias, ensayo personal): 20-30 páginas.
  • Podrán concursar todxs lxs interesadxs que estén inscritos en un programa graduado (M.A., M.F.A., Ph.D.) en español en una Universidad de Estados Unidos durante el año académico 2020-2021.
  • Los concursantes deberán enviar a la Dra. Paola Arboleda, Escritura Revuelta, [parboeda@central.uh.edu], un email en el que se incluya el manuscrito con el que se desea participar y la siguiente documentación:
    • texto del email: debe incluir el nombre del autor/autora, el título del manuscrito, la dirección postal, y un teléfono.
    • manuscrito: debe ser enviado en formato PDF escrito en español (se aceptan diversas modalidades: español peninsular, latinoamericano y/o US latino); no debe aparecer el nombre del autor/a en ninguna página; el título debe aparecer en página inicial y en todas las páginas restantes a lado de la enumeración.
    • inscripción en programa graduado: se debe incluir una copia de los cursos en los que el/la concursante estuvo inscrito/a en uno de los semestres del año académico 2020-2021.
  • La fecha límite para participar en este certamen es el 11 de septiembre de 2021. La fecha válida será la registrada en el email enviado.
  • Habrá un único premio de $2,000 (estando esta cantidad sujeta a las retenciones legalmente establecidas; para recibir el premio se necesita ser recipiente de un Número de Seguridad Social de EE.UU. y completar el formulario W9 para declarar impuestos). La administración de este premio se reserva durante un año, sin retribución al autor/a premiado/a, el derecho en exclusiva de publicar y difundir el trabajo premiado. Una selección de la obra premiada será publicada en la revista Literal, Latin American Voices.
  • El jurado calificador estará integrado por escritores y profesores y sus nombres serán dados a conocer una vez concedido el premio. La decisión del jurado será inapelable. El premio puede ser declarado desierto.
  • El jurado emitirá su fallo a más tardar el 20 de octubre de 2021 y será divulgado por los medios de información del Departamento de Estudios Hispánicos y la Universidad de Houston.
  • La entrega del premio se efectuará en un acto público en fecha y lugar que oportunamente se darán a conocer, en el que se invitará al ganador/a a participar ofreciendo una presentación/recital del trabajo premiado.
  • El hecho de concurrir al Premio Literario Escritura Revuelta implica la aceptación de estas bases, cuya interpretación se reserva la Organización de este certamen y su Jurado Calificador.
