SKYWARN storm spotter training to be offered to campus community

The National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Weather Forecast Office will hold SKYWARN Storm Spotter training at the University of Houston.

The training will take place Wednesday, March 8, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the Center for Public Broadcasting Building. It is free and open to the public, including the UH community. No experience is necessary. Registration is required. Contact Valerie Smith at 713-743-3847 or vmsmith@central.uh.edu.

SKYWARN Storm Spotters are trained volunteers who watch the skies during severe weather and relay reports back to the National Weather Service. The NWS depends on accurate severe weather reports from trained SKYWARN Storm Spotters in order to issue accurate weather warnings in the local area.

Participants will learn:

  • Basic Thunderstorm Development
  • How to Spot Severe Weather
  • What to Report
  • How to Report Severe Weather to the National Weather Service
  • Basic Severe Weather Safety
