What is Sustainability?

At the University of Houston, sustainability involves social, environmental and economic dimensions applied to on-campus initiatives. Our goal at the Office of Sustainability is to educate campus and community members about the importance of thinking and acting sustainably so that we can use resources responsibly while improving the livelihood of present and future generations. Sustainability is a transition from short-term thinking to long-term seeing. It’s a shift in perspective where environmental, social and economic challenges are no longer viewed as separate and competing, but rather interconnected and complementary.

  • Committee

The Campus Sustainability Committee serves as the shared governance body designed to advise university administration on sustainability initiatives. The committee evaluates campus sustainability challenges and represents University of Houston faculty, staff and students.

  • Projects

The Office of Sustainability is currently focusing on campus projects that contribute to sustainable operations. Tree planting, recycling, and green events will bring the community together and improve overall UH sustainability performance.

  • Partners

The University of Houston is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) and submits a triennial sustainability report. UH sustainability programs are only possible through collaborations with student organizations, campus departments, and community partners.
