PROGRAM

Shostakovich: Sonata for Viola and Piano
Arensky: Quartet No. 2 in A minor for Violin Viola and Two Cellos

Featuring

Ervin Luka Sešek, violin
Eunghee Cho, cello
Anthony Kitai, cello
Brian Suits, piano

“Russian Reverence” features a program that follows two inextricable themes: faith and death. Shostakovich’s Santa for Viola and Piano is his final work, which he only completes two days before his demise. In his typical manner, Shostakovich uses militant themes and insistent obstinati to bring this fascinating sonata to life. Finally, the Arensky quartet was written in homage to Tchaikovsky soon after his passing. The piece features orthodox motifs and and chants which open the work and comes full circle in the final movement. The viola part is particularly challenging as it is written to be like a 2nd violin part.
