No More Carmens!
Wednesday, March 22, 2023
5:00 pm - 7:15 pm
The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts would like to invite you to join Dr. Gabriela Estrada and distinguished guests experts in the field in a panel discussion and film screening event titled No More Carmens!
No More Carmens!, is an interdisciplinary panel discussion and film screening created for the University of Houston’s community to discuss the treatment of women in film and in the performing arts. The panel consists of experts in the fields of film, dance, theatre, and women’s studies who analyze the depiction, treatment, reiteration, and normalization of sensitive women’s issues in the performing arts. The title of this event and central topic derives from Mérimée’s novella and Bizet’s opera Carmen, whose gender and racial stereotypes have been integrated into their associated choreography and filmography. This lecture demonstration aims to promote a positive treatment of women within the characters and topics in the performing arts and film. In tandem, the project aims to broaden cross-cultural perspectives, develop an awareness of blind biases, and gather resources for further education, advocacy, and assistance. The components of this lecture demonstration include a brief introductory presentation followed by an interdisciplinary panel discussion, a documentary film and filmed dance performance viewing, and closes with a Q&A. This event is hosted by the University of Houston Film Series: https://www.uh.edu/studentcenters/special-programs/film-series/
