Artist Talk- Sheida Soleimani

Friday, January 20, 2023

4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Sheida Soleimani is an Iranian-American artist who lives in Providence. The daughter of political refugees who were persecuted by the Iranian government in the early 1980s, Soleimani makes work that melds sculpture, collage and photography and highlights her own critical perspective on historical and contemporary socio-political occurrences in Iran. She focuses on media trends and the dissemination of societal occurrences in the news, adapting images from popular press and social media leaks to exist within alternate scenarios. Her work has been recognized internationally in both exhibitions and publications such as Artforum, The New York Times, The Huffington Post, Interview, and VICE Magazine.

Preceding Sheida’s talk, composer Badie Khaleghian and Iranian vocalist Sara Zare will present a short performance. Immediately after the talk, please join us in Elgin Street Studios for the closing reception of “Woman Life Freedom,” an exhibition of work by School of Art MFA students and Houston artists in support of Iranian Women and Freedom.

Event Details: 4:00 - 4:20, performance; 4:25-5:15, artist talk; 5:15 – 5:30, Q&A.
