The cinematic marvel “Feathers of Fire: A Persian Epic” will make its Houston debut at the University of Houston’s Cullen Performance Hall.
Presented by visual artist and 2014 Guggenheim Fellow Hamid Rahmanian, in collaboration with San Francisco-based shadow master Larry Reed and ShadowLight Productions, “Feathers of Fire” is set for Friday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m.

Based on “Shahnameh,” a 10th-century classic Persian epic, “Feathers of Fire” is a shadow-puppet play that tells the tale of Zaul and Rudabeh, two young lovers of old Persia. Zaul is raised by a mythical bird in the wild. His deep love for Rudabeh enables them both to triumph over inconceivable odds, and then give birth to a beloved son, Rostam – the most important mythological hero of “Shahnameh.”
Utilizing eight actors, 160 puppets and 15 masks and costumes, “Feathers of Fire” also projects 158 animated backgrounds on a large screen on the stage.
