The Materials Characterization Facility (MCF) is housed in the Houston's Science Center (HSC) building of the University of Houston's Main Campus. We are part of the Texas Center for Superconductivity of the University of Houston (TcSUH).
We specialize in micro-chemical/structural characterization of solid state materials by x-ray and electron beam techniques.

Research:

[Bullet] Conduct Phase Equilibria Studies on Systems Related to High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) Materials.

[Bullet] Development of High Temperature and High Pressure Experiments for Synthesizing Materials.

[Bullet] Development of the Analytical Capabilities of Electron Beam Instruments.

[Bullet] Conduct Studies in Petrology and Geochemistry (mainly igneous systems).

Services:

[Bullet] Characterization of Materials for TcSUH, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, and Geology Research Groups
of the University of Houston, and for the Houston Scientific Community.

[Bullet] Provide Training in the Following Techniques:

- Transmission Electron Microscope ( TEM)
,
   Electron Diffraction Patterns
   Imaging below the Nanoscale
   Observation of Magnetic Domains
- X-Ray Diffraction (XRD),
   Phase Identification
   Crystal Orientation
- Electron Microprobe Analysis (EMPA),
   Quantitative Analysis of Inorganic Materials
   X-ray Mapping
- Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM),
   Imaging at the Nanoscale
   Compositional Imaging
   Semi-Quantitative Analysis of Inorganic Materials
Crystal Orientation Mapping (with Electron Back-Scatter Diffraction (EBSD) capability)
- Dilatometry
- Associated Sample Preparation.

A pdf brochure detailing our analytical techniques is available for download at our official TcSUH page

Note: what is TcSAM versus TcSUH? In 2005, the Texan Center for Superconductivity and Advanced Materials (TcSAM) was split in 2 units, the Texas Center for Superconductivity of the University of Houston (TcSUH) and the Space Vacuum Epitaxy Center (SVEC), later to be designated the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM). We, the Materials Characterization Facility, now belong to TcSUH.
