Hadas, Moses. Imperial Rome. The Great Ages of Man Series.  New York: Time-Life Books, 1965.  Written for the average reader, this beautifully illustrated book with extension color plates covers the intellectual, artistic, and cultural developments in ancient Rome.

Houston, Mary G. Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine Costume and Decoration. 2nd ed. London: A&C Black, 1959.  An excellent technical explanation of the cut and drape of Greek, roman and Byzantine dress with a few color plates and over 250 line drawings.

Kahler, Heinz.  The Art of Rome and her Empire (translated by J. R. foster).  New York: Crown, 1963.  A good survey of Roman art that covers the far reaches of the Empire as well as Rome itself.

Norris, Herbert.  Costume and Fashion: The Evolution of European Dress through the Earlier Ages. London: J.W. Dent & Sons, Ltd., 1947.  A very useful book, with some color plates and many line drawings by the author, tracing the development of clothing and ornament from Greek to early medieval times.  It is especially helpful on early Christian and Byzantine dress.
