Exploring community and connecting to student identity in Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet

The Houston Shakespeare Festival at the University of Houston, School of Theatre and Dance introduces a day-long summer professional development seminar for educators.
This workshop provides arts-based teaching strategies that can transformhow Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is taught in high school English Language Arts/History and Social Studies classes.
All participants will receive certificates for 10 hours of Continued Professional Education (CPE) credit.

(Parking is available for an additional fee)Who: This training is designed for ELA teachers, social science teachers, and teaching artists for grades 6-12, interested in deeply connecting Shakespeare’s text positively with your students and their community. Led by local and national teaching artists and Shakespeare-focused educators, Illuminating Youth Voices offers teachers innovative curriculum that builds student leadership, empathy, and literacy in the classroom.
Participants are eligible for 10 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) clock hours.

Romeo and Juliet performance (Teachers will receive two (2) free tickets to the Houston Shakespeare Festival performance of Romeo and Juliet for the evening performance on August 6th)
Registration, Tuition, What to Bring
What to Bring:
- Bring anything you think you might need but all materials will be provided. We recommend bringing a water bottle, pencils/pens, laptop (if you prefer to take notes on a device), and a notebook
- Wear whatever is comfortable for you. There will be light movement activities.
- The backstage tour, fight call, Bard Talk, and performance will all be outdoors at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Please plan accordingly.
- Participants are on their own for dinner. Some may choose to bring a picnic at the park. Please visit Miller Outdoor Theatre for more information.
Tuition and Fees: $0 (enrollment capped at 30 educators)
(Parking is available for an additional fee)Spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to the first 30 educators who register. All remaining registrants will be placed on a wait list.
Houston Shakespeare Festival will accept registrations until July 15, 2024.
