Summer 2025 Houston History Magazine College Work Study

The Center for Public History seeks an undergraduate student College Work Study student for Summer 2025 to work with Dr. Debbie Harwell on Houston History Magazine.  

This position is part time, approximately 15 hours per week, for 10 weeks (total of 150 hours), with an hourly pay rate of $14.00- $15.00 per hour.

This student would assist with preparing magazine articles for the fall 2025 magazine to go to the designer, proofread and edit eight articles for upcoming issues of Houston History, assist in completing additional research needed, learn to locate images for articles and write captions as needed, meet weekly with the editor and graduate student summer assistant. If time permits, the student will learn to create and post website content for magazine articles. 

CPH began publishing the Houston History magazine in 2003 as a training ground for public history students and as a tool for community outreach to research, preserve and disseminate stories of Houston’s past.  The magazine published its fiftieth edition, marking its twentieth year in 2023.  Houston History has featured 463 total articles – 200 of those written by students, including 128 by undergraduates in the last ten years.  Topics relate to a variety of topics about the Houston region, broadly defined.  Houston History has successfully worked with students to produce magazines with community partners on dedicated topics such as Hurricane Harvey, the San José Clinic, and the University of Houston.

Position: Houston History Magazine Work Study
Reports To: Houston History, Managing Editor – Welcome Wilson Houston History Collaborative

Salary: $14.00-15.00/hour, or determined by supervisor

Job Status: Part Time (approx. 15 hours per week up to the maximum hours paid by your award)

This position assists in producing the Houston History magazine and website by working with the editor, graduate assistant and other students to coordinate magazine content for publication of fall magazine.  

Training will be provided for all job duties, so you do not need to be an expert in the field to apply.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist in moving Houston History magazine through the publication process
a. Attend weekly staff meetings, possibly two meetings when needed
b. Proofread and edit articles for upcoming issues of Houston History, published once each semester
c. Learn to locate images for articles, write captions
d. Do additional research if needed to verify or add to material in submitted articles.
e. Perform rewrites when necessary
f. Coordinate with other students on their articles in a peer review-type process 

2. Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently; communicate clearly and persuasively across all mediums, be detail oriented, and contribute to building a positive collaborative environment.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience: Must be pursuing a bachelor’s or graduate degree and have related experience.
Language Ability: Proficient in English, with good spelling, writing, and research skills. Spanish proficiency is a plus, but not a requirement.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
Computer Skills: The individual should have demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Word. The candidate must know how to perform basic research on the Internet and in the library.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The employee must occasionally lift and /or move up to 25 pounds. The employee spends the majority of the work hours sitting but is free to adjust his or her workstation to stand. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Required Work Schedule

Work schedule to fit within normal CPH work hours: Weekdays, 9:00AM - 5:00PM. 
No weekends. 
On-campus only. 
Work schedule to be coordinated with the Magazine editor to ensure flexibility for student course work/class work.
