MUSI 1311 - Theory II

Class Description:
Tonal voice leading, including the use of 7th chords, modal mixture, scalar variants, secondary dominants, and modulation.

Prerequisites:
Grade of C- or better in Theory I

Expectations:
By the end of this class, each student should be comfortable with the material discussed in this class, up through modulation utilizing secondary dominants, and be able to apply these concepts in figuring bass, writing from scratch, and analyzing music from the literature. Nothing less will qualify the student for a passing grade. As homework is a significant part of the learning process, it has been given a significant standing as part of the final grade in the class. All students should attend class with all of their required materials each day, and turn in the required homework.

Benjamin, Horvit & Nelson. Music for Analysis, 7th ed.

Attendance Policy:
Attendance is mandatory for this class. Because of the condensed time frame, each class day will be important in learning the material. The following are the penalties for absences beyond three:
3 Absences: No Academic Penalty
4 Absences: Final grade reduced by one letter (A to A-, B+ to B, etc.)
5 Absences: Final grade reduced by two letters (A to B+, B+ to B-, etc.)
6 Absences: Removal from the class with a failing grade.

Each three tardies in the class add up to an additional absence.

Please Note:
- These are absences for Theory II only. You are allowed 3 absences in Theory II and 3 absences in Aural Skills II with no penalty.

Exam:
Thursday, July 26, 8:00-11:00 am

Grading:
Daily work and Homework: 40%
Midterm Exam: 20%
Final Exam: 20%
Composition Project: (20% Total)
    Intermediate Stages: 5%
    Final Performance/Score: 15%

Please Note:
- All homework is due within the first ten minutes of the class day on which it is due. I will not accept late homework without a discussion before the homework is due.
- There will be no make-up exams.

Office Hours:
Within the first week of class, potential office hour times will be discussed, at which point they will be posted here. Your first recourse in communicating with me should be email (here).

Academic Honesty:
Last but most definitely not least, all students are expected to comply with the University of Houston's policy on Academic Honesty, available at this link. You should be able to use your fellow students as resources for learning the material, but any copying of any kind on homework assignments or exams is a violation of the University's policy and will be dealt with severely.

Class Description:
A continuation of Aural Skills I, including sight-singing, sight-reading, and dictation.

Prerequisites:
Grade of C- or better in Theory I
Grade of C- or better in Aural Skills I

Expectations:
By the end of this class, each student should be comfortable with the material discussed in this class, including sight-singing and dictation covered in the class. Nothing less will qualify the student for a passing grade. As homework is a significant part of the learning process, it has been given a significant standing as part of the final grade in the dictation portion of the class. All students should attend class with all of their required materials each day, and turn in the required homework.

Horvit, Koozin & Nelson. Music for Analysis, 3rd ed.

Singing (50% Total)
    In-Class Work: 15%
    Midterm: 15%
    Final: 20%

Grading guidelines for prepared singing:

Sight-Singing is a bit of a misnomer for this portion of the course; all students are expected to review the melodies on the course assignments page before class begins each day. Do not show up to class unprepared.

A+         Correct pitches, correct rhythm, correct conducting, performed confidently and musically
A           Correct pitches, correct rhythm, correct conducting
A-          Minor errors in one or two areas
B+         Minor errors in three areas or 1-2 obvious rhythm errors; stopping and continuing
B           2-3 serious pitch errors or serious rhythmic errors; beginning over
B-          3-4 serious pitch errors and/or many rhythmic errors
C's        Starting over more than once; additional pitch and rhythm errors; failure to conduct
D's        Numerous errors in all areas; lack of orientation to key center; poor preparation
F           Numerous errors in all areas; apparent lack of preparation
