GEORGE MAGNER AWARD FOR UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC
ADVISING
CONNALLY GIVES BACK TO HER ALMA MATER
Rebekah Connally went from studying art history in Fort Worth to
counseling University of Houston students in just a few years.
The UH alumna joined the university in 1989. She now is an academic
advising specialist in the Division of University Studies and a
recipient of the 2005 George Magner Award for Undergraduate Academic
Advising.
Connally’s contributions to the division include researching
and compiling an extensive student internship database. Despite
her accomplishments, Connally is proudest of her work with students,
recalling one student who described herself as illiterate.
The student, who was encouraged by Connally to continue her education,
received a doctorate in psychology years later. In a letter of support,
that student wrote that Connally “is part of what makes the
University of Houston an exemplary institution of learning.”
The award, which carries a $500 check and a plaque, is given to
staff and faculty members who demonstrate excellence in student
advising.
