  • Perrin Calzada

    Major: Computer Engineering and Analytics

    Minor: Data Science

    Perrin is looking forward to expanding his reach beyond his major, to learn from the varied and diverse experiences of his fellow Houston Scholars. As a gay man in a STEM field, Perrin wants to make sure his voice is heard and wants to work to dispel the stigma against queer people in professional positions. He hopes to continue to learn about a variety of topics, as well as educate others. The exchange of knowledge and the sharing of experiences can only make us stronger.

  • Reece Collins

    Major: Honors Biomedical Sciences

    Minor: Medicine & Society

    Reece is a student in the Baylor College of Medicine Premedical Academy. As a Houston Scholar, she will pursue her passion for research in disease treatment and biotechnology. In addition to her scientific research, Reece is eager to study strategic public policy decision-making in the healthcare industry. Mastering the intersectionality of science and public policy will make Reece not only an exceptional medical practitioner but also a civic leader.

  • Paul Daniel

    Major: Biology

    Minor: Medicine & Society

    Paul is a student in the Houston Premedical Academy 8-year BS/MD program passionate about research and community impact. He is a BOUNCE/PATH Intern and Bonner Leader, both programs through which he is able to provide community service and outreach. This is Paul's second year in the Houston Scholars Program, which has granted him access to research, programs, and awards. He hopes to continue these endeavors and increase his community engagement while finding novel ways in which he can develop himself personally and professionally.

  • Jayden Gunsolley

    Major: Finance

    Minor: Energy and Sustainability

    Jayden is looking forward to learning more about current issues in the Your World, Your Voice course as well as gaining knowledge about research programs and graduate school. He also enjoys the opportunity to hang out with the other Houston Scholars and to further his personal and professional development. He enjoyed the Houston Scholars program last year, and is proud to take part in it this year.

  • Kaden Helmka

    Major: Mechanical Engineering

    Minor: Mathematics

    Kaden is an undergraduate researcher and a teaching assistant for the honors first-year engineering courses. His goal is to get the most value out of his college experience. Kaden sees the Houston Scholars program as a great way to do this through professional development, applying to competitive scholarships, and learning about and getting involved in exciting academic opportunities.

  • Rosemarie Faustina Le

    Major: Honors Biomedical Sciences

    Minor: Medicine & Society

    Rosemarie's long-term goals are to apply to fellowships and to become a physician-scientist with a Ph.D. in neuroscience. Currently, she does research on subarachnoid hemorrhages in Dr. Gavin Britz’s lab at Houston Methodist. She has done several other research programs: UH HERE, the Houston Methodist Summer Undergraduate Research Internship, and the EPFL School of Life Sciences Summer Research Program. For the Houston Scholars program, Rosemarie looks forward to meeting the cohort and hearing about what amazing things they do!

  • Angela Nguyen

    Major: Psychology

    Minor: Medicine & Society

    Growing up in the diversity of the Houston area, Angela has really enjoyed exploring museums and bookstores as well as trying new foods. Moreover, her experiences with the large medical center here are one of the reasons why she has chosen to pursue medicine as a career. Therefore, as a Houston Scholar, Angela hopes to partake in research, learning, and service opportunities that will help her to one day become a more well-rounded, understanding physician. Aside from this, she would love to meet new people through this program and gain a deeper perspective of our world.

  • Minh Dat “David” Nguyen

    Major: Mechanical Engineering

    Minor: Mathematics

    David is a Houston Bonner Leader and an undergraduate research intern at the Texas Heart Institute. His long-term goal is to explore the intersection of engineering and medicine with a focus on advancing patient-centered treatments through the development of medical devices. As a Houston Scholar, David is eager to learn from the interdisciplinary backgrounds of his peers and collaborate with them in workshops and seminars to strengthen his communication and leadership skills.

  • Duong Thuy Nguyen

    Major: Chemical Engineering

    Duong is an international student from Vietnam, currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in engineering in the U.S. She has chosen this path because of the country's prominence in the energy sector. Being part of the Houston Scholars Program, she is eager to receive guidance in exploring research and internship opportunities related to energy and sustainability. This program will be significant in advancing her academic and career objectives in the United States. Duong is excited about the prospects of learning, evolving, and making contributions to this field while embracing the diversity and innovation found in American universities.

  • Haley Romine

    Major: Biology

    Minors: Medicine & Society, Chemistry

    Haley is a part of the second-year Houston Scholars cohort. Through the Honors College, she has participated in HERE, SURF, and PURS programs. From this, she has developed a passion for biology and psychology research and plans to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. As a Houston Scholar, Haley is most looking forward to collaborating with fellow scholars and broadening her knowledge of global issues.

  • Justin Schnitzer

    Major: Political Science

    Justin is an Eagle Scout, a member of the UH Policy Debate team, and an intern with the Pervez Agwan for US Congress Campaign. As a member of the Houston Scholars Program, he hopes to learn more about applying to scholarships and graduate programs, as well as discovering opportunities for research and other academic projects! Additionally, Justin wants to form connections with faculty and professors at UH who can help him in his academic career.

  • Nathan Stiehl

    Major: Honors Biomedical Sciences

    Minor: Medicine & Society

    During his time at UH, Nathan has cherished being a member and now executive of the Bonner Leaders’ Food Insecurity Team (FIT). He is drawn to sports medicine and psychology research and intends to become a medical doctor specializing in neurology or sports medicine. As a part of Houston Scholars, Nathan looks forward to learning from a community of gifted academics and gaining insights into the graduate and professional world of application writing and professional techniques from the exceptionally talented staff and faculty at UH.

  • Melody Tran

    Major: Honors Biomedical Sciences

    Minor: Medicine & Society

    Melody is highly involved in Honors in Community Health and the Honors Mentorship program. In addition, she has also participated in research through the HERE and PURS program. As a Houston Scholar, Melody hopes to get to know her fellow scholars and further her professional development skills as she works towards pursuing a career in medicine.

  • Divya Valipe

    Majors: Mathematics, Public Policy

    As a lifelong Houstonian with a passionate interest in exploring the intersection of data and policy, Divya is excited to be in Houston Scholars! She looks forward to learning how to grow in her chosen field and gaining access to invaluable resources and mentorship for academic research and fellowships. With this program’s amazing cohort, Divya is grateful to have the opportunity to work and join a community with them, and overall she has high hopes for her future as a Houston Scholar.

  • Nathan Varghese

    Major: Chemical Engineering

    When Nathan is not in class or performing computational chemistry research, you can find him at Chess Club where he serves as the VP or just hanging out with friends. He joined the Houston Scholars program to see for himself how other students at UH are making strides toward innovation and advancement in their communities and learn from them what he can do to push himself and the people around him forward.
