Houston, Mary G.  Ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine Costume and Byzantine Costume and Decoration.  2nd ed.  London: A. & C. Black, 1959.  An excellent technical explanation of the cut and drape of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine dress with a few color plates and over 250 line drawings.

Lassus, Jean.  The Early Christian and Byzantine World.  Landmarks of the World’s Art Series.  New York: McGraw-Hill, 1967.  Covers all aspects of eastern Mediterranean art in the thousand years following the acceptance of Christianity in Rome.  Excellent illustrations with many color plates.

         Norris, Herbert.  Costume and Fashion: The Evolution of European Dress through the Earlier Ages.  London: J. W. Dent & Sons, Ltd., 1947.  A very useful book, with some color plates and many line drawings by the author, tracing the development of clothing and ornament form Greek to early medieval times.  It is especially helpful on early Christian and Byzantine dress.

Rice, David Talbot.  Art of the Byzantine Era.  New York: Praeger, 1963.  An excellent and beautifully illustrated survey on he visual arts of Byzantium

Sherrard, Philip.  Byzantium.  The Great Ages of Man Series.  New York: Time-Life Books, 1966.  Intended for the average reader, this beautifully illustrated book, with extensive color photography, covers the major cultural, intellectual, and artistic developments in the Byzantine Empire.
