As governor of Texas and on behalf of the people of our great state,
I want to offer my sincere thanks to Dr. Arthur K. Smith and his
wife, June, for their years of hard work and commitment and dedication
to the University of Houston.
In listing your contributions to higher education, there is no
doubt many will point to outstanding achievements such as the establishment
of the prestigious Presidential Endowed Scholarships. Others may
point to increased research funding to help vision or to the many
construction and renovation projects that help make those programs
a reality.
But, the true measure of your hard work and leadership could be
seen in our state for years to come. The standard of Texan you’ve
set will touch the lives of students in the University of Houston
System today and in the decades ahead. As a result, our state, our
nation and our world will be a better place.
Dr. Smith, Mrs. Smith: each of you truly embodies the Texas spirit.
May God continue to bless you and your family, and may God continue
to bless our great state.
