Dr. Daniel Maxwell is the 2018 recipient of the NASPA Region III’s AVP/Senior Level Student Affairs Professional Award. In its second year, the award honors a student affairs professional at the Associate Vice President or senior-level whose outstanding commitment to the profession includes the development of programs that address the needs of students, the creation of a campus environment that promotes student learning and development, and support of active engagement in NASPA.

As the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs for the UH System and the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at UH, Dr. Maxwell provides executive administrative support for the division and administrative oversight for Student Housing and Residential Life, University Career Services, and Urban Experience Program. He also provides division-wide leadership for Strategic Planning and Assessment, Marketing and Communication, Student Success Initiatives, Academic and Faculty Collaborations, Advancement, Emergency Management, UH at Sugar Land, UH Katy, and Division Committees.

“One of Dan’s strengths is his ability to relate well with people and build strong collaborative relationships,” offered Dr. Richard Walker, Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services. “Dan has led the charge of developing a culture of assessment centered on learning outcomes, he has led the strategic planning process helping us create the first-ever strategic plan for the division, he has established a marketing and communications focus where one previously did not exist, he has been the shepherd of the professional development efforts under the direction of the Professional Development Committee, and he has established an external review process for departments.”

The AVP/Senior Level Student Affairs Professional Award recognizes an individual’s record of innovative programming that has had an impact on the home campus environment and service and volunteer service to the association. Monica Thompson, executive director of University Career Services, stated, “Dan is a role model and true inspiration to those in the student affairs field. His work is exemplary, and he has an outstanding commitment to the profession which includes the development of programs that address the needs of students and the creation of a campus environment that promotes student learning and development.” Don Yackley, executive director of Student Housing and Residential Life, added, “Dan has had a distinguished and significant impact on students, Student Affairs professionals, countless campus partners and faculty members at the University of Houston, and other universities.”

Fundamentally, the AVP/Senior Level Student Affairs Professional Award celebrates individuals who create a campus environment that promotes student learning and development. Dr. Catherine Horn, professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, offered that “his approach for this work, consistent with his engagement across responsibilities, is one of working collaboratively with staff to interconnect incremental processes in program development and implementation of the Division’s broader, shared mission, and vision.” Dr. Teri Elkins Longacre stated, “In addition to the expertise that he has demonstrated in our work together, Dan is a true professional and a delight to work with.”

Dr. Maxwell has been in his current role since January 2012 and earned his doctorate at Indiana University.
