Manufacturing Transitions

Saturday, January 4, 2025

5:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Manufacturing Transitions examines architecture across scales, from the environment to full-scale prototypes, focusing on territory, materials, and transitions. By tracing materials from extraction to assembly, it ties design to industry, fostering innovation in production. This connection, whether literal or abstract, encourages an intuitive, experimental, and artisanal approach, broadening possibilities and enriching the design process.

Houston’s local and available materials — wood, metal, and brick — are surveyed through the lens of territory, industry, culture, society, and history, allowing various hypotheses to emerge and inform architectural responses.

In the Mashburn Gallery, the exhibition reimagines transitional spaces and architectural elements through research and material surveys, translating insights into full-scale constructions that emphasize experiential opportunities within these spaces.

Can architecture engage in an open, sensitive dialogue with its environment—one that respects its environmental, territorial, and cultural context? Can transitional spaces be rethought through material exploration to create new spaces that foster stronger human and social connections?

This exhibition delves into these questions, showcasing the potential for a deeper, more meaningful relationship between architecture and the materials that shape it.
