Houston, March 22, 2017 —Members of the University of Houston Office of Sustainability presented at the fifth annual Texas Regional Alliance for Campus Sustainability Summit, held March 5-7 at Texas A&M University-Commerce. Melissa Halstead, sustainability coordinator; Nikhil Schneider, student office and team lead; and Joanne Ma, student outreach assistant, discussed with guests and attendees from across the state their work to foster environmental stewardship at UH through projects like Shasta's Prairie. Located at the green space between the Science & Engineering Classroom building, Science and Research and the UH Science Center, Shasta's Prairie offers visitors a glimpse of the coastal tallgrass prairie that thrives at the UH Coastal Center. It also serves as a living laboratory for biology and ecology students to study native Texas plants and pollinators. The pocket prairie was established in May 2016 primarily through fundraising and in partnership with Katy Prairie Conservancy. Members of the Office of Sustainability maintain the prairie with the help of dedicated volunteers. The Texas Regional Alliance for Campus Sustainability fosters statewide, inter-campus collaboration on sustainability efforts such as environmental preservation, economic development and social equity. This year's conference had presenters and representatives from colleges, universities and businesses throughout Texas.
