Art exhibit includes work of UH's Mike Guidry

As curator of the public art collection for the University of Houston System, Mike Guidry oversees hundreds of pieces of work in all forms and sizes created by individuals from all walks of life.

But he's also an artist in his own right - a painter known for his works that hint at futuristic landscapes - whose latest piece is on public display.

"If You Cut It, They Will Come" is a group exhibition at the McMurtrey Gallery in Houston. The exhibit, which runs through Oct. 19, features the works of six artists, including Guidry, whose contribution is a wall painting that measures 10 feet by 18 feet.

"It is a cityscape painting depicting a fictitious futuristic place," said Guidry, who recently spent a week at the gallery creating the piece.

According to the gallery's description, Guidry, who received his MFA from UH in 1996, "reimagines the world in geometric whimsy."

The exhibition features artists who all use elements of collage when creating their works using an array of different techniques and concepts. Besides Guidry, the other artists include Sandi Seltzer Bryant, Jane Eifler, Ted Larsen, Lance Letscher and Rusty Scruby.

The McMurtrey Gallery is at 3508 Lake St, which is just northwest of Kirby and Richmond. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the gallery or the exhibit, call 713-523-8238, email info@mcmurtreygallery.com or visit www.mcmurtreygallery.com.
