UH CLEANS UP THE CAMPUS

UH faculty/staff scoured the campus for trash and recycling on Tuesday, August 2 for the first ever Clean Up Day. The volunteers spent their morning working hard to get our campus ready for the students this fall, collecting almost 600 pounds of trash and recycling.

Representation was seen from both faculty and staff who came out to show they care about our campus. A big thank you goes out to all that participated in the event.

Volunteers were split into six teams to tackle different campus zones including areas around the Quadrangle, Calhoun Lofts, University Center, Wortham Theatre, Agnes Arnold Hall and McElhinney Hall. Each team was led by a member of the Plant Operations team to guide the volunteers in their efforts. The volunteers were armed with trash bags, trash pickers, gloves and scrapers to collect litter, gum, stickers and other debris found in their zone.

Throughout the day, the teams competed to collect the most trash and to find the most unusual item. Team A led by Ray Mosley collected 205 pounds of trash throughout the day to lead the teams in most trash collected. Team C led by James Ballowe found a fire hose during their cleaning efforts and will be awarded for collecting the most unusual item. Winners will receive a gift card from McAlisters Deli which will be delivered through interoffice mail.

All volunteers will receive an aluminum water bottle to keep along with the specially designed UH T-shirt they received that morning to thank them for their participation.
