The
task of transporting fish to the UH
Meditation Pond isnt as simple as
it sounds. Due to the sweltering hot
weather, careful consideration had
to be taken so that the fish would
have a better chance of survival
resulting in some delays.
Installation date arrived in late
August during the first week of
classes. Led by consultants Lake
Management Services, L.P. (LMS), the
pond received the long awaited fish
including two thousand fat head
minnows, two hundred fifty blue
gill, and twenty bass. For now, none
of the species are over four inches
long.
Alex Alexander, director of grounds
who oversaw the installation, said
their goal was to introduce natural
and native species. The fish will
experience some shock as they adjust
to their new environment. He added,
The pond has become a nesting and
food source for many new bird
varieties such as ducks and herons.
Toss in turtles, and things like
goldfish that students may dump in
the pond, and it appears that the
goal to exhibit a natural setting
has been met. And even if we didnt
add the fish, theyd come here
naturally.
Aaron Gannaway of LMS agreed by
concurring that youd be surprised
how nature makes a way.
