Meal plan and textbook scholarships awarded to students

Sam Genty doesn't have to worry about paying for his meals as he goes through his freshman year at the University of Houston.

That's because he is one of 10 students who've been awarded a Meal Plan scholarship, which provides an All-Access 7 meal plan for both the fall and spring semesters. The scholarship was sponsored by UH Dining.

"This scholarship will not only allow me to eat for free at the dining halls, but has encouraged me to apply for other scholarships,"said Genty, a petroleum engineering major from Austin. "I am truly grateful for this scholarship."

In addition, 13 students received the Barnes & Noble textbook scholarship, which provides them $400 for the fall and another $400 for the spring to pay for books and supplies in the UH Bookstore. Sophomore Matt Bactad was one of the recipients.

"The scholarship helped me in that it took some stress off of buying textbooks and supplies,"said the pre-pharmacy major from Missouri City. "As books become more expensive, every bit of financial assistance is appreciated."

Tien Phan, a senior accounting major from Houston, also received the textbook scholarship.

"One of my classes requires me to buy a $240 textbook,"Phan said. "This scholarship helped alleviate the pain that buying that book would have caused me."
