UH police release tips for staying safe
For a crime to be committed, an offender must have desire,
ability, and opportunity. Law enforcement can do little to
remove an offender's desire and ability to commit crimes, but
together we can remove the element of opportunity. Remove the
temptation of opportunity by taking precautions. Visit the UHDPS
web site for more tips on preventing crime.
Protect Your Property
- Lock your home or office door each time you leave even for
short trips down the hall to visit your neighbor or co-worker.
- Do not hold open any secure doors to buildings or dorms to
allow others to enter.
- Do not leave items of value out in the open. Leave them in the
trunk of your car or, better yet, take them home immediately.
- Engrave your driver's license number on property items (Operation
ID). Record serial numbers and brand names for property.
- If you carry a purse, hold it close to your body; if a wallet,
keep it in a front pocket.
- Dont display your cash or any other inviting targets such as
pagers, cell phones, hand-held electronic games, or expensive
jewelry and clothing.
Protect Yourself
- Lock your door when you take a nap or retire for the evening.
- Require identification before admitting someone unfamiliar
into your room.
- Walk on well-lit paths. Walk with others if possible,
especially at night, or take advantage of our Cougar Patrol
Escort Program.
- As you walk down the street or through the parking garage,
walk alertly and assertively. Dont weigh yourself down with too
many parcels.
- Do not give out personal information over the phone, through
the mail, or over the Internet unless you have initiated the
contact or know with whom you are dealing.
- Report suspicious people or circumstances. Stop a crime before
it happens.
Call 713-743-3333.
- Offer your confidential assistance to the University Police.
