UH TAKES HOME PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD FOR UH VS. RICE CHILI COOK-OFF
UH
won two competitions versus Rice this year during the Bayou
Bucket matchup, one on the field and one in the tailgating area.
Although Rice took home the trophy for Judges Choice for the UH
vs. Rice Chili Cook-off, UH was the favorite among tailgaters
receiving the Peoples Choice award.
The tradition of the chili cook-off began three years ago as a
way to showcase the talented chefs and get students involved.
The cooks reported to their stations around noon the afternoon
before the football game on October 27 to begin preparing their
chili masterpieces.
This was my first time planning the chili cook off and I must
say, I had a blast doing it, said Billy Garner, Marketing
Coordinator for Auxiliary Services. The event turned out really
well and we all had fun being a part of it!
This year, UH was represented by Chef Brent Gorman and two
students who won a cook-off challenge last month, Victoria
Kinabo and Jeffrey Clark. Rices cook-off team included its
chefs Sarah Finster, Caesar Tovar, Ian Kenetic and Rice student
Zach Marx-Kuo. Rices chili creation was a tangy chili using
nontraditional ingredients such as roasted peppers and
coffee-flavored beer. They topped it off with a creamy sauce and
a cracker in the shape of an owl. UH went with a more
traditional chili using top sirloin, vegetables and seasonings
to make a spicy chili with a hearty flavor. The UH team topped
it off with shredded cheese and chives.
Judges representing both schools along with a mutual judge, Chef
Tarsha Gary from Crave Gourmet Bakery and Catered Caf, tested
the chili to decide which batch was the favorite. Students and
other members of the UH community were invited to also taste the
chili and cast their votes for the Peoples Choice award. Rice
received the trophy for Judges Choice with a score of 100-94
while UH won the Peoples Choice award with a score of 39-28.
Thanks to all that came out to support UH! UH plans to reclaim
the trophy and win both awards next year. For more information
