UH Bookstore Partners With Online Book Source

Another source for affordable textbooks will soon be available at UH, as the University Barnes & Noble partners with Flat World Knowledge, an online open book source for students and faculty.

Flat World Knowledge is a source that makes textbooks available for online reading. The most exciting part of this program is the fact that this online source is free.

As the books are posted openly online, there is no charge to read the book. If a student chooses to print a chapter, they may do so at a small charge of $1.99 per chapter.

Another benefit to this book source is the fact that instructors have the ability to edit the books online and customize them electronically.

The implications of this capability are tremendous, as it means that the purchase of new editions every year or two need not be required.

Blackboard, an online classroom management system, can provide some similar services to students, yet Flat World Knowledge offers a direct source for textbooks, giving students one more option for saving money on books.

This source can also help with streamlining textbook adoptions for professors, as the timeliness of this process is always critical.

In order for this program to take effect and be successful, professors need to be aware of this sources availability and take advantage of its services by signing up, and placing their book online.

Though only a few titles are currently available for online review, the goal is to expand this program and encourage its adoption so that students and faculty may benefit from its capacity to increase the accessibility and affordability of textbooks.
