Student Spotlight: Amber Green

Attending the University of Houston was a last-minute decision for Amber Green.

She grew up in San Marcos and was accepted into Baylor University. But after the first semester there, she soon realized she needed to find a college that better suited her.

I have a sister who lives out here, and so my mom told me I should apply to the University of Houston, said Green.

It turned out to be the right choice.

After living on campus in Moody Towers her first semester, she fell in love with the university.

The on-campus life here was what made me like it a lot, said Green, a kinesiology major who will be graduating in December. I would recommend living on campus because you learn a lot, and you also gain friends, too. Living in housing makes you more comfortable and accessible to making friends. Its very convenient, too. When you live here, its real easy to go to the library and get that book you need, but when you are at home, you dont want to have to make that drive.

For much of the time that shes attended UH, Green has been a student worker. For two years, she was a computer lab monitor at the Alumni Center. Since this past September, shes worked in the Administration & Finance office. She does a variety of tasks, from filing and copying to logging in contracts.

After graduation, her plans are to attend physical therapy school and become a physical therapist.

I would like to work at a childrens hospital first, get some experience under my wings, and then in the long run open my own practice, Green said.

When she was a student at San Marcos High School, she played on the basketball team. Here at UH, she occasionally goes to the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center to shoot some hoops. Shes also participated in some intramural sports.

Not only is she the first person in her family to attend the University of Houston, shes also the first to go to college.

Its going to be a big deal for my family, she said.
