Sergeant recognized for response to possible active shooter situation

On Nov. 14, the UH Police Department received notification that there was possibly an active shooter in the Campus Wellness and Recreation Center. Sgt. Damian Martinez was the shift commander at the time and immediately responded to the scene. Without hesitation, and precisely as trained, he led a group of officers into the building in order to identify and, if necessary, neutralize the threat.

As Martinez and his officers entered the building, more than 100 people were exiting it. Despite the chaotic nature of the scene, Martinez and his team remained calm and focused as they entered the expansive and architecturally complex building. Officers from surrounding agencies arrived and assisted the team with clearing the building. Martinez ordered officers to activate the buildings fire alarm system to ensure complete evacuation.

Martinez exhibited superior leadership skills during this incident. He courageously led his officers into a potentially dangerous situation while remaining calm and in control. Because of his leadership efforts, nobody was hurt and no property was damaged. Martinez ensured the safety of all individuals on campus and handled the incident in a proficient and efficient manner.

The UH Police Department recognized Martinez, who has been a veteran of UHPD for more than 12 years, on Feb. 27. Police Chief Ceaser Moore awarded him a University of Houston Police challenge coin, which depicts the UH Police Departments core values of effort and respect. .
