Officers attend Additional Duty Safety Officer training
The University of Houston Department
of Public Safety arranged with the
State Office of Risk Management to
conduct training for our security
officers to aid them in their daily
duties of looking for and
eliminating unsafe conditions around
campus. The first course
administered was the Additional Duty
Safety Officer Orientation (ADSO).
The ADSO responsibilities include:
 Assist in carrying out assigned
duties and responsibilities for
health and safety.
Assist in making job safety a
priority
 Preparation of Standard Operating
Procedures and Safety Directives
 Assist in making inspections of
physical conditions and work
practices, and maintain a record of
inspections.
 Assist in investigating mishaps,
assist with required reports, and
follow-up on action taken to prevent
recurrence
The second course administered was
Hazard Communication and
Understanding Material Safety Data
Sheets. This course dealt with the
basics of dealing with chemicals. It
went over the hazards of chemicals
in the work area, interpreting
information on warning labels,
understanding material safety data
sheets, protecting oneself and
responding to emergencies involving
chemicals.
These two courses highlighted in the
minds of our security officers that
it is their role to constantly be on
the lookout for any unsafe condition
they encounter and take prompt
action to eliminate the unsafe
condition in order to make the
university as safe of a campus as
possible.
